About Adriana
I am deeply passionate about teaching, mentorship, and advocacy, especially related to the Type 1 Diabetes community, global health, and public health. I am interested in understanding health from a variety of perspectives and creating community and support for those living with chronic (autoimmune) diseases.
Research Interests
Human Biology and Evolution, Biocultural Anthropology, Population Health, Global Health, Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs), Autoimmune Diseases, (Type 1) Diabetes, Social Determinants of Health, Biological Normalcy, Support Networks, Disability Studies, Nutrition
Research Background
My research is primarily focused on studying noncommunicable (particularly metabolic) diseases and risk factors and the relationships to health inequities and social determinants of health, both on a population level globally and specifically related to Type 1 Diabetes. On a global level, I am interested in using “big data” and a biological normalcy framework to assess biological variation in metabolic diseases, biomarkers, and risk factors, as well as associations with a variety of societal and cultural factors. My Type 1 Diabetes research interests span the life course. I have a particular interest in both the biological variation within this population, nutritional patterns and habits, and the role of support networks and community in diabetes management and outcomes.
