Celebrations
Further achievements by our students:
- First-year grad student Julio Villa-Palomino has been awarded the Beatrice and John Whiting Society for Psychological Anthropology (SPA) Biennial Travel Grant ($400) to facilitate participation in the 2019 SPA Biennial Meetings in Santa Ana Puebla, New Mexico.

- Eric H. Thomas received a John Bodley Student Travel Award ($500) to attend the SfAA Annual meeting in Portland, Oregon.
- Alfredo Rojas also received a John Bodley Student Travel Award ($500) to attend the SfAA Annual meeting in Portland, Oregon.
Further achievements by our faculty:
- Amanda Thompson was selected to receive the American Society of Nutrition’s 2019 Norman Kretchmer Memorial Award in Nutrition and Development. “This award is given to a young investigator for a substantial body of independent research in the field of nutrition and development with potential relevance to improving child health.”
- Jocelyn Chua has been awarded a 3-year National Science Foundation Senior Research Award ($275,000) to fund her research project, “Chemical Warfare: Psychopharmaceuticals and Medicated Soldiering in America’s Post-9/11 Wars.”
- Angela Stuesse has been awarded a fellowship at the National Humanities Center (2019-2020) for her book project: “#FreeDany: Dreaming and Detention in Dixie.”
- Angela Stuesse and Emily Burrill (Director, African Studies Center) were selected for a UNC IAH Collaborative Grant for their project, “Cartoonists for Human Rights: Autocracy and the Fight for Freedom of Expression in Equatorial Guinea, West Central Africa.”
