Dissertational Research & Writing

Following the successful completion of the PhD examinations, the student “Advances to Candidacy”. The PhD candidate normally undertakes research and completes a dissertation under the supervision of his or her PhD committee. Typically, the fieldwork portion of one’s PhD training is not funded by the department. Students should therefore actively pursue funding through grants and fellowships to support their fieldwork. Students with internal funding from UNC or external funding for their dissertational research, and students conducting research off-campus should coordinate carefully with the DGS, Student Services Manager, and related offices UNC to ensure compliance with all funding, travel, and visa procedures.

During their dissertational research and writing, students should enroll in dissertational hours (ANTH 994).
