Further achievements by our graduate students:
Samantha King received the National Association for the Practice of Anthropology, first runner up award for Student Achievement for her article “GIS as a bridge across the digital divide: Engaging participatory methods to build capacity in research communities.” The honor comes with a $300 prize.
Elisabeth Kago Ilboudo Nebie (PhD 2018) has accepted a tenure-track position in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC) at Arizona State University to start in August, 2021. Eric Thomas (PhD 2020), Lisa Ilboudo Nebie (PhD 2018), Samantha King, Alfredo Rojas, Koffi Nomedji (Duke Cult. Anth) and Colin Thor West had a mini-issue on “Participatory Mapping and GIS” appear in the Winter Issue of Practicing Anthropology.
Julio Gutierrez has been awarded an NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant for his dissertation project in El Salvador, “Land Speculation and the Political Ecology of Real Estate Markets in Post-Agrarian El Salvador.”
Maja Jeranko has been awarded an NSF DDRIG (NSF Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant) to support her research on successive disasters (earthquake and COVID-19) and subsequent initiatives on gender relations in coastal Ecuador. The research will be partially remote and partially in-person, health conditions permitting. Maja is also the recipient of a Quick Response Research Grant from The University of Colorado at Boulder’s Natural Hazards Center to study the impacts of COVID-19 on gender relations in post-earthquake housing settlements in Ecuador.

Maya Berry received a Johnston Excellence Teaching Award.
Caela O’Connell has been nominated by UNC for the Carnegie Fellow competition. She also has been selected as guest editor for CAFE’s special issue on COVID-19 Pandemic and food systems in a forthcoming December 2021 issue; and has been re-appointed as Corresponding Editor for Current Anthropology until 2024
