Research & Activities:
My research focuses on the late prehistoric period in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Specifically, I concentrate on the Coles Creek culture (AD 700—1000), an indigenous cultural tradition that is commonly believed to show the earliest indications of chiefdom-level societies. My dissertation project focuses on the Feltus site (26-K-42), an early mound center located approximately 12 miles north of the modern city of Natchez, Mississippi. My goal is to investigate changes in the sociopolitical climate at the time by examining the mounds themselves: the method(s) of their construction, their use(s), and the power that they brought to the landscape that they modify.
