CEP Burgundy Field Station

The Carolina Environmental Program (CEP) is an interdisciplinary initiative of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Its mission is to promote innovative approaches to the study of the environment and to lead the UNC-CH community in addressing the environmental issues of the state, the nation, and the world.

Dedicated to building partnerships and sharing resources, CEP crosses the traditional boundaries between Academic and Health Affairs to involve faculty, students and staff from more than two dozen participating units. It promotes undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the earth and environmental sciences, offers two undergraduate degree tracks (BA and BS) in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences, and encourages interested students majoring in other disciplines to enrich their studies by taking environmental courses and participating in related activities. CEP brings together diverse teams of researchers to work on large-scale, multifaceted environmental problems. It also serves the public by providing technical assistance, training, and up-to-date information on environmental issues.

The Burgundy research is currently in the process of becoming a CEP field station. The field station will begin operation for a period of 10 weeks, beginning in the fall of 2001.  Instruction will include, but not be limited to:

Historical ecology                    Economic geology                 Demography, settlement, and land use
Risk and sustainability            Public policy and values       Issue analysis in a multiscalar context

Instructors will be UNC-CH faculty, drawn from pertinent departments, schools, and programs. The field station offers UNC-CH an integrated environmental program with an international venue and a genuine intellectual opportunity for faculty and students to collaborate.
